The nutritional and biological value of olive oil for the human body is extremely significant and for this reason it is listed among the 10 most beneficial foods.
Olive oil has a clear protective effect on the metabolism, contributes to the development during childhood and increases life expectancy. It is considered healthy food product because of its content of monounsaturated fat, which increases the good cholesterol, helps in the smooth functioning of the arteries and prevents blood clots. Furthermore, it has been proved that avoids the possibility of cancer, reduces the risk of coronary heart diseases and prevents the formation of free radicals which cause the destruction of cells in the human body.
The therapeutic benefits of olive oil were first mentioned by Hippocrates, the father of medicine. Presses for the production of oil from the olives and jars for oil storage were found in Greece dating before historic times.
